Monitoring programmes in participating countries contribute data to GEMS/Water for >800 stations worldwide (Fig. 1). The number of stations for which GEMS/Water has data continues to increase and new data received are processed into the database regularly. In this way, GEMS/Water maintains a living database that is continuously updated. While the station compliment addresses the three main target sectors for freshwater resources of rivers, lakes (including reservoirs) and groundwater, unfortunately GEMS/Water does not have data for wetlands, which play important roles in the ecology and hydrological cycles of many countries.
