The early 1850s saw professional highlights in Billings's career, such as the original illustrations to Uncle Tom's Cabin and the design for the colossal National Monument to the Forefathers at Plymouth, but these years also saw the addition of personal grief to his financial woes. 49 In the absence of informative papers, only the barest suggestions of the sad end of this marriage come through to the present. Other than her name, what little is now known about Hammatt's first wife concerns her final years.
