Every country in the world has had a turbulent history. Nigeria’s has been compressed into less than a century, and I believe we are now on the other side.
Indeed, and may our progress from here be rapid too.
I see too often people act as though we are a helpless victim of our history. Yes Africa is steeped in many terrible historic moments, some of them Africa’s own doing, some of them not. I think as the most populous African country, Nigeria must set the example. We have a past as difficult as any, but if Nigeria can move on to a place of equality and prosperity then so can all of Africa.
Exactly, and this will start the ball rolling. If one African country prospers, it can help those around it to do the same, and they can help others and so on. I believe Nigeria can be the catalyst for this change — if we are not, then we must not be too proud to learn from the one who is. ?
Yes I hear this all the time too, people bringing up every instant of the past that has put us where we are now. I say to them this: If you are so obsessed with history, then why don’t you work to create a Nigeria that future historians will smile upon? ?
Exactly. I imagine the past and the future as two objects, the present as a hand trying to move them. The past is completely immovable, it will not budge! But the future, we can put where we want. I think it is obvious which of the two we should be preoccupied with.
