For many years Nigeria was treated as a pariah state. This caused a huge drop in foreign investment and is one of the key reasons for the current weakness of the Naira against other currency. Do you think we have truly shaken off this pariah reputation,

The democratic process has gone uninterrupted for nearly 20 years in our country. If this is not enough time to show the world that Nigeria has stabilised I do not know what will be.

There is always such emphasis on a functioning democracy as the crowning achievement of any society. I agree that democracy is the best system that we know of, however Nigeria’s democracy is an export of the British system. That system barely works in Britain, so why would it be the best choice for Nigeria?

I agree. Nigeria needs democracy, but it has to be a Nigerian democracy, created to suit our country’s needs. If we create a strong system that works, then other countries will not only accept us, but turn to us for guidance.

There are accepted states across the world whose ‘democratic’ system is just a thinly veiled form of despotism. I believe Nigeria is committed to uncorrupt democracy and other countries are taking note of this.

Yes, and I think it is time for Nigeria to invest in other countries — that is the only way we can play this game as equals.

Indeed, we have historically been in a position where our fate has been determined by the whims of foreign powers. Now we must get to a place where we have our own terms.
